Fat City

We were in the Bay Area this weekend to celebrate the high school graduation of yet another handsome young man in the family. He will be matriculating at San Francisco State University in the fall. And we're excited to see the direction his life takes.

Naturally this celebration involved dining. We started at Bake Sale Betty's in Oakland--fried chicken and cole slaw sandwiches chased by strawberry shortcakes as big as your head. We did some damage at the Louisiana-style eatery, The Front Porch, in the city; I had the shrimp and grits. Day two found us knoshing on submarine sandwiches and thai food in Newark. Graduation Day saw us making multiple passes at the Mexican buffet Jill arranged for the graduate's party. Yesterday we topped it off with an excellent Middle Eastern in the Holy Land (by way of Berkeley) and scoops of milk chocolate salted almond and brown sugar oatmeal raisin ice cream (most ingredients locally sourced) from Ici.

Will be eating green salads with a squirt of lemon for the rest of the summer.

Congrats to your nephew.  The food sounds heavenly, especially the shortcake!  I'll join you in the salads this summer.
