Yoga movie-asana

In lieu of doing yoga yesterday, I watched it. Just as good, right?

The film, Enlighten Up! takes a stranger-in-a-strange-land approach to the subject, following the hapless Nick Rosen, a 29-year-old journalist, as he traverses the global yoga landscape. Along for the ride is Kate, the frustrated documentarian, who keeps hoping Nick will reach enlightenment or at least admit, yoga can transform the spirit.

Light on history and tantric philosophy, Enlighten Up! does feature interviews with the late Pattabhi Jois (of Ashtanga fame) and BKS Iyengar, who waggles his eyebrows at these filmmaking acolytes, enjoining them to practice, practice, practice.

Don't expect samadhi here, but do watch to get a sense of the proliferation of this practice, its varieties, charletans and reasons for being. This is a sweet, generous film that will make you want to give your yoga mat a big ol' squeeze.

You can stream it instantly on Netflix.

Thanks! Our library has a copy, and I've just placed a hold on it.
